Cape Fear Stories: Land of the Longleaf Pine
Cape Fear Stories: Land of the Longleaf Pine will feature exciting new research and stories never been told about the Lower Cape Fear region's early inhabitants and Colonial experiences. Visitors to the new exhibit will step into an immersive longleaf pine forest and be transported to a time centuries ago. They will explore the longstanding presence of Native Americans in the area, discover why Europeans came to the region, and learn how people made a living from the forests. They will discover colonial Wilmington, while 'window' shopping in a merchant's store and examining imported goods that arrived on ships to Wilmington's bustling port. Audubon NC Free Birding Tours
The sights and sounds of colorful and unique coastal birds fill the air in coastal North Carolina this time of year. Audubon North Carolina staff are helping people get close-up looks at these natural marvels through free guided tours of the Mason Inlet Waterbird Management Area through September. The tours, which run from 9am to 11am every Friday, are open to the public and feature a walk along the protected sanctuary that serves as habitat for beach-nesting birds including Least Tern, Black Skimmer, American Oystercatcher, Wilson's Plover and other unique and interesting coastal birds. Audubon North Carolina worked with the local community to develop this dynamic bird sanctuary from an inlet relocation project. Mason Inlet is now home to the state's largest beach-nesting colony of Least Terns. You do not need to register, just meet at the Mason Inlet information kiosk. Wilmington Sharks Baseball Season
The Wilmington Sharks have released their schedule for the 2010 season. The regular season starts on Wednesday, May 26th and runs through Monday, August 2nd. The league's annual All-Star Fan Fest and All-Star Game will be on July 19th and 20th. The location of the 2010 CPL All-Star Game will be announced in the near future. The Wilmington Sharks will open their 2010 home schedule on Thursday, May 27th hosting the newest CPL franchise, the Morehead City Marlins. The Sharks will begin their season on the road in Asheboro on May 26th, against the Copperheads. The Sharks will end the first half of the season at home when they host the Thomasville HiToms on June 28th. The final regular season home game is scheduled for Sunday, August 1st against the Columbia Blowfish. The Sharks 2010 schedule features a total of 18 games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights including nine "Thirsty Thursdays." In addition to 28 CPL games at the â??Shark Tankâ?? the Sharks will also be hosting three exhibition games for a total of 31 home dates in 2010. For more information call 910.343.5621.

NC Aquarium Behind the Scenes Tour...and More
The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher is now offering an Extended Behind the Scenes tour that takes participants deeper into the hidden layers of the Aquarium. The program will feature the traditional behind the scenes tour, which includes exploring animal quarantine, life support, food preparation, and access areas. The tour will then continue to the top of the Aquarium's largest exhibit, the Cape Fear Shoals, where participants will have the rare opportunity to view a live feeding of the 235,000 gallon tank from a newly created viewing deck. Sharks, stingrays, moray eels, spadefish, and other large fish call the exhibit home and will be swimming below during the tour. The 2 hour tour is for ages 8 and up, children 8 to 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The fee is $20.00 for ages 13 and up, and $18.00 for ages 8-12. Aquarium admission is included. The Artful Peanut - Peanut-iest Day in the South!
It's been 30 years since Poplar Grove, the oldest peanut plantation in the south, opened its doors to the public for tours. Dating to 1795, the plantation found its way back to prosperity after the Civil War thought the cultivation of peanuts. Two ships named NORTH CAROLINA participated in the Civil War: the Ship-of-the-Line NORTH CAROLINA served in the Union Navy and the Ironclad NORTH CAROLINA served in the Confederate Navy. Carolina Living History Guild members will set up displays that highlight the history of the USS North Carolina and the CSS North Carolina during the American Civil War. Displays will include steam engineering, ironclad ship construction, navigation, small arms of the US and CS navies, naval ordnance (artillery), uniforms, and the "arts of the sailor."
